Methodology

How We Compared These Tools

Every tool here runs geo-grid scans of Google Maps: it searches a keyword from many points around a business and maps the rank at each one. We compared them on what changes the result for a buyer:

  • Price, and what it is charged for: grid points, locations or listings.
  • Grid size and coverage: how many points and how wide an area.
  • Competitor data: whether you can see who outranks you at each point.
  • Free credits, free plans and trials.
  • What sits around the grid: reviews, citations, GBP posting, AI analysis, white label.

Prices and limits come from each vendor's pricing page, product pages and help centre in September 2026. Review sites were not used for figures because they often lag behind price changes.

Disclosure: GridBeacon is our product. We list it first because this is our site, not because we scored it highest on every point, and each section below says where the other tools beat it.

Buying guide

How to Choose a Local Rank Tracker

Start from what you will do with the data, then check the price at your real volume, not the entry price.

1. Decide what you need to track

If the Google Maps map pack drives your calls, a dedicated geo-grid tool is enough. If you also report on organic rankings, Apple Maps or AI answers, you need a broader tool, or two.

2. Work out your monthly grid points

Businesses × keywords × grid points × scans a month. Three keywords on a 7 × 7 grid weekly is about 640 points per business. Compare tools at that number.

3. Check what the price is tied to

Per-location and per-listing pricing rises with every business you add. Per-credit pricing rises only with how much you scan.

4. Match the grid to the service area

A 5 × 5 grid is fine for a café. A roofer serving a metro needs 13 × 13 or more and a wide radius. Check the maximum grid and radius.

5. Look at competitor data

Knowing your rank is half the answer. You also need to see who ranks above you at each point, ideally without paying for extra scans.

6. Test on your own business

Use free credits or a trial to scan one real keyword. Look at whether the heatmap and reports make sense to you and your clients.

Want a quick look first? The free Google Maps rank checker runs a 3 × 3 scan of any business without an account. For agencies, see GridBeacon for agencies.

FAQ

Local Rank Tracker Questions

What is the best local rank tracker?

It depends on what you need beyond rankings. For Google Maps geo-grids at the lowest cost per scan, GridBeacon. For tracking Apple Maps and AI search as well, Local Falcon. For an all-in-one local SEO suite with citations and reviews, BrightLocal. For the cheapest entry plan, Whitespark Local Ranking Grids. For GBP post scheduling alongside grids, Local Viking.

What is a geo-grid rank tracker?

A geo-grid rank tracker checks where a business ranks on Google Maps from many points laid out in a grid across its area, instead of from one location. The result is a heatmap that shows where the business appears in the map pack and where competitors take its place.

Why do Google Maps rankings differ across a city?

Google ranks local results partly by the searcher's distance from each business. The same search made two miles apart can return a different map pack, so a single rank check from one point shows only a small part of the picture.

How much does a local rank tracker cost?

Most charge by grid points scanned, by locations or by listings. Entry prices run from about $10 a month (Whitespark Local Ranking Grids) to $49 a month (Localo), and several tools have free credits or a free plan. Check what you pay per grid point and whether the price rises with each business you add.

What grid size should I use?

Use a smaller grid, such as 5 × 5 or 7 × 7, for a business whose customers come from a few miles around it, and a larger grid, such as 13 × 13 or bigger, for service-area businesses covering a whole metro. Keep the same grid and radius from scan to scan so results are comparable.

Is there a free local rank tracker?

Several tools have a free starting point: GridBeacon has a free plan with 500 scan credits and a free 3 × 3 rank checker, Whitespark gives 200 free credits, Local Falcon 100 free credits, and Semrush has a limited free Map Rank Tracker allowance. BrightLocal and Localo offer 14-day trials.
